No one should have to sleep alone in the cold and rain.

Officials are working tirelessly to provide this year’s Western Ventura County Temporary Emergency Shelter, which for the first time is open round the clock and participants can stay during the day.

The cities of Ventura and Oxnard, and the County of Ventura, have joined forces (and funding) to provide this 24-hour facility where our area’s homeless friends and neighbors can have a safe place to sleep, protected from the elements. The Shelter will stay open as long as funding allows.

Every year, dozens rely on sheltering during the winter months (last year, there were more than 600 unduplicated users). The shelter provides a hot shower, a warm catered breakfast and dinner, a bed and a safe haven during the chilly and rainy winter. The operation is run by an experienced manager and team of workers, along with volunteers.

This is the first time the shelter is open 24 hours, so costs will go up from previous years.

Any private monies raised will go to provide the best service we can and ensure the shelter stays open as long as possible.

Thank you for your interest in extending a generous hand and compassionate heart for those who are homeless in our community.

There are two ways to donate: By check, which is our preference because there are no fees, or online by clicking the PayPal Donate button below. You will receive a receipt.

To pay by check, please make it out to Downtown Ventura Organization and mail to P.O. Box 1414, Ventura, CA 93002. Or you can deliver your donation to the DVO offices at 420 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura, CA 93001.

Paper goods also can be donated.

Among the items which are most critically needed, in large quantities, are paper goods such as toilet paper, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, paper plates and cups, and plastic utensils (for safety reasons we cannot use metal silverware or cutlery).  With 110 persons per day, we are in constant need of replenishing these supplies.  So we are seeking donations of these goods from any company, retailer, or organization that is able to support our sheltering operation.  Anyone considering making such a donation is asked to please contact the Shelter main line at 805-247-0335 to make arrangements for pickup or delivery of such donations, either directly to the shelter or through the non-profit Oxnard Business Improvement District.

In addition, while the budget so far has permitted staff to provide for hot breakfasts and a hot evening meal, we rely on community organizations to help out with food and nourishment during the day.  If you or your community group can sponsor a noon-time meal, or otherwise provide a lunch on a specific day, please contact the Shelter in advance.
