VFS screening of The Source Family
December 1, 2013 @ 6:15 am - 10:00 pm
The Source Family will screen on Tuesday December 1 at 6:15pm, at the VFS’s new state of the art location, 420 E. Santa Clara St. Tickets are $10 general, $7 for seniors and $5 for students. The Source Family is a riveting and highly personal insider’s guide to the counter-culture movement of early 1970’s Los Angeles. The Source Family, headed by their charismatic spiritual leader, Father Yod, (a World War II veteran and successful entrepreneur by the name of Jim Baker), passionately pursued a communal lifestyle and other radical experiments in utopian living. “The Source”, their pioneering Sunset Strip health food restaurant, their legendary rock band Ya Ho Wa 13, and the seemingly endless array of beautiful women in the family, made them the darlings of hipster Hollywood. But their outsider ideals and unconventional behavior became an issue with local health and building code authorities. Father Yod made a lot of people nervous with his 13 wives, free love doctrine, and other “cult-like practices”. Controversy followed the group when they decamped for Hawai’i in search of a fresh start. This is not what they found in that island paradise. Their presence was unwelcome and their concept of “family” not appreciated by most of the locals. After a few years of diminishing allegiance, tragedy befell the community, leading to their dramatic demise. Filmmaker Maria Demopoulos and Jodi Wille will attend, along with very special guests.
