Movement Matters: The Missing Piece from Our Sustainability Models
Food and movement are central to human culture. Until recently we’ve had to move a ton to be able to eat, thus our need to eat kept everything moving. Current food systems have outsourced almost 100% of our daily movement to machines that run on oil and electricity and to humans and non-human animals working in brutal conditions across the globe, and have created an unprecedented group of sedentary people with little experience and skill moving through natural spaces.
Join biomechanist Katy Bowman and regenerative rancher Doniga Markegard to explore the idea of movement as a nutrient, exercise as a vitamin supplement, and how we can move more for everyday essentials rather than saving movement for exercise or weekend adventures. We’ll take a frank look at the role everyday personal sedentarism plays in our food and larger ecosystem, and discuss the role movement plays in a farming model that puts nutrients back into grasslands, stores increasing amounts of carbon in the soils, and increases biodiversity. By moving more of ourselves more often, especially for our food, we can help environmental resilience and regeneration. This free 45-minute presentation will be followed by a Q&A and book signing! Food and drinks will be available.
