The Goodwill movement was founded by Reverend J. Helms in Boston, Massachusetts in 1902.  Dr. Helms pioneered the concept of recycling and selling donated goods as a means of helping people in need.  In 1919, Goodwill came to Los Angeles and Goodwill Industries of Southern California was formed, which included Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.  The first store in Ventura County opened in downtown Oxnard on the corner of 6th and C Street in 1961, where it remains today.  In 1997, the Ventura and Santa Barbara Unit separated from the Southern California Goodwill, and was incorporated as a separate corporation, officially adopting the name Goodwill Industries of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, Inc.
